Our Story, Location & Brands

about-ula-stives-shop.jpgOur Story

Established by Cornish maid, Kirsten Edwards, initially as an online business in 2007, Pretty Useful has gone from strength to strength. Starting off with only a handful of products, we now strive to source the best quality, beautifully made gifts we can and have several hundred pieces of carefully, chosen loveliness.

From 2008  Pretty Useful has been based in a quirky old chapel in West Cornwall and in 2015 we ventured into the fashion sector with our sister store Ula Clothing and Lifestyle to source beautifully made clothes too. We started off with 2 Cornish labels and 1 high street name and very quickly picked up other core labels that emphasised our desire to encourage people to buy locally and ethically. We pride ourselves on having a great team of lovely sales assistants, who smile a lot and love being surrounded by (and showing off) all the fabulous things in the shop. We like to connect with our customers and our surroundings. We love to stock Celtic designers and have taken huge pleasure in watching some of these designers go from cottage industry to achieve great aplomb and success.

Our brands and makers

We have some particular favourites amongst our brands and makers but we like to have a story to tell and love to meet the designers personally and get to know what inspires them. We have worked with several for many years. For many, we know where they grew up, what they "used to do" before they were a designer, their favourite colour or form of cuisine. We know those who like to go camping with their pooches and we can name a few others who would rather sit and watch nature or the sea lap up on the shore and dip their toes in with a glass of wine in hand. Many of these makers, get a place in Pretty Useful at the start of their careers and we have been able to watch them thrive, meet new challenges and overcome them. They are not anonymous designers working in front of the computers. They are the birds - swimmers - sunlight - glow in the dark skulls within  their products and we love them as much as we love their tea towels - prints - bandanas - bread bags - cushions - mugs - packaging.
